ON THE FLAMENCO TRAIL- CÁDIZ (2000–Open, Wednesday, 24 June) Experience the deeply expressive Andalucían art form of flamenco music (song and guitar) and dance in one of the most important centers of flamenco in southern Spain. We will go to a flamenco locale in Cádiz to observe this rich component of Spanish culture. We will walk to the venue or take taxis (at our own expense). The cover charge for the flamenco show and one drink are included in the price of this practicum. SEVILLA & CÓRDOBA (0800 Thursday, 25 June – 1900 Friday, 26 June) The charm of Sevilla, with its beautiful streets, historic cathedral, quiet Alcázar, and amazing nightlife, is infectious. Founded by Julius Caesar, Sevilla has been a thriving seat of Moorish culture, focal point of the Spanish Renaissance, and keeper of Andalucían culture. The province of Andalucía also boasts a proud seafaring history, echoing names such as Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, and Sir Francis Drake. Spain’s trade with the New World centered on Seville for more than 200 years. Compared to the more flamboyant Sevilla, Córdoba is often described as refined and dignified. Nowhere else in Spain are the remnants of ancient Islamic, Jewish and Catholic civilizations so visibly intermixed. For example, Córdoba is home to one of Spain’s most spectacular monuments, the Moorish Mezquita (mosque), which dates from the 8th through 10th centuries, and to the only synagogue in Andalucía to survive the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. Day 1: Proceed by motorcoach to Sevilla (two hours) to visit the third largest Cathedral of Christendom, which houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus, and the Alcázar. Built originally as a fort in 913, the Alcázar has beenadapted and/or enlarged in almost every century since. Today it is more of a palace than a fort and is a beautiful and intriguing place. Walk through Santa Cruz Quarter, the old Jewish area of the city. Drive through the new, cosmopolitan section of the city and view the site of the Universal Exhibition Sevilla 92 and Torre del Oro, the great Tower of Gold landmark. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and some free time in Parque de Maria Luisa and Plaza de España. Proceed to Córdoba for dinner and overnight. (L, D; area hotel) Day 2: An intensive morning excursion in Córdoba includes visits to Mezquita, a mosque intended to surpass all other mosques in grandeur; the Alcázar, constructed for the Catholic Monarchs in 1328; and Judería, Córdoba’smedieval Jewish Quarter. Return to the hotel for lunch before the return drive to Cádiz. (B, L) |
